James Hammond

James Lee Hammond, age 53, died from natural causes at Davis Hospital near his home in Clearfield, Utah, on Thursday, May 23, 2002. Jim was born on June 30, 1948, to Elbert and Rosella Hammond in Rupert, Idaho.

Jim was a gifted musician who played the trombone, French horn, baritone and served as student conductor of his high school band. He also sang tenor with the voice of an angel. After high school graduation in 1966, Jim attended the U.S. Navy School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia and then played French horn in the Navy marching band for six years. Jim later re-enlisted in the Navy to serve as an electronics engineer. He was granted an officer's commission and served a total of 20 years before retiring as a Lieutenant in 1987.

Jim obtained a bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University in 1984 and a master's degree from the University of Southern California in 1989. He became a computer programmer and a systems analyst after retiring from the Navy, and moved to Utah in 1991 to pursue that career.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sandy Hammond, and his daughter, Mary Hammond, of Clearfield, UT; and his son, Michael DuPlantier, and daughter-in-law Dana, in Houston, TX. He is also survived by his stepmother, Beverly Hammond, Yuma, AZ; his sister, Kathy Barnett, Sandy, UT; his sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Roger Krebs, Kennewick, WA; and his brother and sister-in-law Bob and Lizann Hammond, Kennewick, WA.

Those of us who survived Jim know that we have lost a brilliant, caring friend and family member who has no counterpart. No one can replace him and we will miss him and love him forever.

Services will be held Saturday, May 25, at 1:00 p.m. at Hansen Mortuary, 710 Sixth Street, Rupert, Idaho.  Buried in MAR Cemetery, Rupert, Idaho
